Where Are the Others? v0.2.2 Update


Mini-postmortem: that was fun!

  • 46 hours working in the engine.
  • Accidentally importing High Definition Render Pipeline Assets and breaking the whole game, but still wanting the assets. I got it all to work in the end.
  • Figuring out that some things are nondestructive, and others are remarkably destructive. Time Machine 🙌🏼.
  • And it was wonderful.

Changelog (v0.2.2)

I made what seemed like an ever-growing list of modifications from the base concept I was given. Let's itemize everything that isn't directly related to storytelling and design.

Global changes:

  • Added "spikes" zone to prevent soft locking by moving out of bounds.
  • Improved lighting and set design to guide player toward objectives.
  • Added a new "AI Sphere" object that tracks player movement and drops items.

Art changes:

  • Modified all textures on all enemies to remove metallic look.
  • Increased iridescence for Bloater and Screecher wings.
  • All enemy eyes now glow.
  • Bloom post-processing has been added to the camera.
  • Introduced new water material for Level 1.
  • Replaced Shotgun C with Shotgun B. Created new UI assets to represent the updated shotgun.
  • Improved quality of terrain textures; added grass, bushes, and wind.
  • Updated skybox for all levels and the main menu.
  • Added health bar on the right side of the screen.
  • Changed from conceptual HUD assets to high-detail HUD assets.
  • Updated all game menus and font styles.

Audio changes:

  • Replaced audio for all levels and main menu.
  • Scripted for certain events to trigger changes in music.
  • Improved audio mix so no sounds are too loud.

Balancing changes:

  • Reduced likelihood of enemies dropping health items.
  • Added cover to boss battle.
  • Modified health of various enemy spawner pods.
  • Modified ammo pickup quantity and increased rate of ammo drops from enemies.
  • Adjusted damage dealt by Ice Shotgun and Electro Gun.
  • Adjusted projectile speed and size for all weapons.
  • Reduced accuracy of enemy projectiles. These shots are now less predictable.
  • Modified triggers to enable and disable enemy spawners so the player can move at their pace without being overwhelmed.


Known issues (v0.2.1 & v0.2.2)

  • Occasionally, the player dies immediately on respawn, even when no enemies are present. A solution is in the works. For now, every run is a one-life run. Enjoy the improved difficulty!
  • If using a smooth scrolling mouse wheel, weapons may switch too quickly to select the correct one. Use the <1> and <2> keys to switch weapons if this affects your mouse.
